Name of Project: Das Rote Wien in Zahlen

Description of Project: How can we tell the story of social reform measures that were implemented in Red Vienna around 100 years ago and had a lasting impact until today, with the help of statistical data? Statistics Vienna dug through its archives in search of meaningful figures and data and developed seven different viewpoints on the cause and effects of the social improvements introduced at that time. Experts formulated texts that support and explain the figures, while students, alumni and staff of the Visual Communication Department of the University of Art and Design Linz translated the information and data into easy-to-understand information graphics. The aim was to ensure that as many people as possible, regardless of their level of knowledge and education, could read and understand the data. To achieve this, a form was chosen that acts with symbols or uses and drives forward formats such as those already developed by Otto and Marie Neurath in the time of Red Vienna. The visual quotations are deliberately set in order to establish a reference to Red Vienna, Isotype and Vienna’s Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum led by Neurath at that time. However, no historicising visual language was chosen. Instead, the brochures use the new corporate design of the City of Vienna introduced in 2019 for the first time and thus provide a best practice example for the use of the colours and the specially developed font for the City of Vienna. More than 12,000 copies of the red brochure were printed and distributed within a very short time to a large number of interested people and institutions throughout the city. This brochure is slimmer and contains only basic texts and the entire range of information graphics. The second, white brochure was more extensive, as it also contained the seven reading texts of the experts. An additional poster collected a small selection of the graphics from the brochures in a compact and attractive format and was distributed to and displayed in many public places, such as libraries.
